Just Desserts - 100 Words

I decided to create a flash fiction challenge for myself from a crossword puzzle I just finished.

100 Words on #10 Down and Across on the Daily Crossword Puzzle on the AARP website.
The words are Demi and Dessert

Just Desserts

The ten guests were a mix of winners, losers and a couple of pot stirrers who kept the conversation elevated and robust.

“Will Hank be joining us?”

“Please, eat. Hank will be with us by dessert.”

After dinner, Demi disappeared into the kitchen. She returned with a skull on a platter filled with what appeared to be watermelon pieces impaled by fancy toothpicks. She offered each guest a piece. One took two.

She set the remaining dessert at the head of the table. Demi lifted her piece as if to toast.

“To Hank: I'm so glad you could make it.”

Not sure what I think of this effort. Did not spend much time on it. And yes, I am rusty.

For the musical choice, I picked "Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair" as performed by David Bromberg. It was originally released in the 1920s by Bessie Smith. I decided I liked David's version best. I think of it as a kind of epilog for the 100 words above.

The Secret of God

I decided to cross post some of my flash fiction from "BoZone Too". Not sure why.

 The Prediction Weekly Writing Challenge

for Thursday June,16, 2022 - midnight GMT

100 word maximum - Three words - Available, Third, Yoke

The Secret of God

Eons before any other species began to gain self awareness, our kind learned in their third epoch the most efficient method for conquering the Universe.

It wasn’t with grand, extravagant, expensive violence. No.  Cost too many lives. Instead, we learned unexpected and unseen infiltrations were consistently more successful at bringing another race or planet under our yoke.

Our asteroid will collide with Planet 13 in Quadrant 2334 soon. There will be no need to prepare to land. Available DNA strands safely ensconced deep inside this rock will ensure a successful conquest.

Patience and time is all that is needed now.

So, for this post, I had to include two musical choices :

"Galaxy Song" - Monty Python

&

"Space Oddity" - a one off cover by Astronaut Chris Hadfield in 2013

Sunday Morning Outrage

Early this AM before I fed the animals or made fresh coffee, I grabbed a cup of day old joe, mic-ed it, sat down at my desk and opened up Facebook. I had not even worked the night grunge out of my eyes, yet here I was scrolling through the posts with a chip on my shoulder. I did not remember details from my dreams the night before so I had no hint why I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. But I did.

A familar irritation had taken root again. An irritation I developed to a keen edge over the last 6 years when the Right compounded their ever increasing stupidity and pushed a moron into our lives.

I came across a quote post attributed to Arnold, one of the few Republicans I still have any respect for. You can read it there on the right.

The lead in comment by T*:

"The earth isn’t stagnant. Climate change has been happening since the dawn of time."

At the bottom of 70 plus replies to T*'s classic Winger go to Troll comment, I posted this:

"So would this be an excuse to not try to mitigate the worst effects? Certainly Climate Change or global warming has happened many times before. Does that mean we should just carry on and add to the damage? Or maybe start paying attention to a planet whose resources are being used up at an ever increasing rate. Maybe start looking to clean up our nest that we have been shitting in for so many millennia."

I was pleased that I did not let my shoulder chip get the better of me. I made my point and left. ..... Left that is until I got here to my relatively safe space I call "The BoZone".

It was not surprising the ardent climate change advocates were sucked in by this low hanging fruit. This was a post on a purportedly science leaning group page. Folks posted graphs, charts, and probably held pointers as they scurried to get their replies in front of the audience.

What surprised me was climate change folks continue to reply to the audacious Winger troll bait aimed at owning the libs and progressives because that is more important than anything other than kissing the orange man's ass. These clueless minions of the Right have nothing tangible in their support quivers most days, so they make shit up, obfuscate reality and fact with unitelligible replies, or just use a bunch of  fuck you emojis.

The problem with these worthless Winger taunts is they work. These clowns are able to stir up the local Liberals on a facebook page with drivel and nonsense.  And even though I have recently vowed to not get sucked in, here I was sitting in with 70 others who had Sunday Morning Outrage.

Twenty Years Later - 100 Words

I am still angry, sad and confused over 911 and all the madness that has transpired in the twenty years since. My country was brutally reminded that the planet was no longer just our oyster. The age of modern colonialism was over.

Adrift in a new age with no rudder, our response was mindlessly lashing out which was what the attackers wanted. Any victory perceived on the far horizon was doomed to fail. And fail it did; Big time.

Time may heal wounds but Time does nothing for the sad memories so violently implanted.

Where do we go from here?

Fearless Nature - 100 words

I was rooting through old pictures yesterday searching for specific Kodak moments from my past. The images I sought were not found. Instead, unexpected images caught my eye. I pulled out my smart phone and copied a few of them.

The one to the left is my daughter and I enjoying her first trip up a ladder. She was not even three yet.

Though tentative, there is no panic on her face. It was an early glimpse into the fearless nature she would grow into as she took on each new challenge in her young life.

She made me proud.

Moscow Mitch

Moscow Mitch McConnell blocked Democrat sponsored election meddling bills yesterday.  His claimed partisan politics by Democrats rings hollow given that he had been key to lifting sanctions on a Russian mafia/business oligarch so he could get a piece of the $200 million aluminum plant to be constructed in his home state of Kentucky.

Folks may wonder why I hate the Right so much.  The over abundance of sleaze bags like Moscow Mitch found in the GOP is a good place to start.  Sure, the Democrats have their share, but, hands down, no one can do sleaze like a Republican can.

Conquering Hero

This was a piece I wrote for a flash fiction challenge awhile ago.  I wrote it in memory of a friend who did not die in Vietnam.  He died because of Vietnam.

Found it again and thought it might be appropriate to re-publish it here with a new year looming and all.  What can we do to keep this kind of legacy from repeating itself in our future?

His eyes were full of the things he had seen.  His mouth, full of stories better passed over than passed down.  Memories caught in his craw and woke him sweating cold in the dread of his nights and left him staring into his darkness til Dawn’s early light.

Well meaning people wearing blue scrubs and white coats did what they could.  As it was with so many others, it did not work out.  Scarred and broken, he was sent back to a homeland that would never be the same for him.  His innocence pooled bloody on too many foreign plains.  Feeling forgotten, discarded and alone with his demons, he sought solace in barbiturates, whiskey and gin.  He could never forget his role in the premeditated chaos of Man killing Man in faraway lands.

One day he gave up, double hit China White, laid down and he died.  Before his curtain closed, with one final sigh, the untold stories and nightmares at last said goodbye.  Our conquering hero had finally found his peace.

"A Cicatricial Reminder" - 100 Words

I was sure I had purged my belly full of anger a few weeks ago.  Apparently not.

I decided to once again try my hand at some Flash Fiction when I found a blog run by an old Flash Fiction friend that offered up a weekly 100 word challenge based on the prompts she came up with.

I also decided that writing an upbeat happy 100 words would put me in just the right mood to walk down to the Town Hall and step into a voting booth.

Try as I might, I could not fashion anything warm and fuzzy, wry or humorous.  All I had floating around inside the cranial void were serious negative waves dude.

I was actually surprised.  I thought that some of my recent rants, posted and unposted , would have set me straight.

So my re-entry into Flash Fiction is dark, ........ yeah, not a pleasant tale.

Be forewarned and remember it is only a story.

100 Words - Not Sure Why

Not sure why I suddenly have this intense urge to write.  Not sure why I am still damn busy at the bike shop.  Guess there are a lot of why’s in and around my life.  Most I don't wonder about.  Some cause me to pause to attempt figuring the why like if I could figure out that why, I would finally have a secure grip on this insane trip I am on.  Since I cannot for the life of me, figure out the many whys, I sit clueless and empty of any explanation of what, where and most important, why.

Before You Vote - These 100 Words

Facts intermingled with conjecture and forgone conclusions cast Truth aside in favor of expedient knee jerked solutions.  Lost in a sea of deception, specious goals are massaged by lying hands, replacing Honesty with Truth’s ugly step sister, the Half Truth.

The Midway Squawkers and Snake Oil Salesmen insist and demand the Half  Truth into our lives hoping their deception lasts long enough for them to cash in their nickels and dimes.

Assaulted long enough, we allow recent lies to become our New Truth. Delusion casts itself in stone and merry populations dance around it happy as if they had brains.

I actually wrote this back in 2012 under the title "Lying Truth" as my response to a writing challenge.  But I felt it was appropriate for the Present as nothing has changed for the better.  Truth be told, I really think there are more numb skulls than there were just two years ago.

Lying Truth - 100 Words

Facts injected with conjecture and forgone conclusions cast Truth aside in pursuit of knee jerked solutions.  Lost in a sea of deception, specious goals are massaged by lying hands, replacing Honesty with Truth’s ugly step sister, the Half Truth.

The Midway Squawkers and Snake Oil Salesmen insist and demand the Half Truth into our lives hoping their deception lasts long enough for them to cash in for their nickels and dimes.

Assaulted long enough, we allow recent lies to become our New Truth. Delusion casts itself in stone and merry populations dance around it happy as if they had brains.

Words of Encouragement – 100 words

The grey understood the edict forbidding contact of any kind. They were to leave no clue of their presence in this part of the Great Beyond. The grey knew well his race's failures in the past when they exposed themselves too early.

The grey still bristled. Some encouragement should be communicated. Some signal that would let them know they would prevail. Instead he had to watch them suffer…………… But did he?

“I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together” – just silly lyrics thought up while on LSD Lennon insisted. “They mean nothing.”

FFF #41 - Proof - 100 words

Friday Flash Fiction time again.  This week I was going to write a longer piece than my usual 250 words or so.  And I did.  But 1300 words into it, I hit a wall.  I walked away from it for several days hoping I would have a Eureka moment while going through the motions of my normal day.  Nope.  No Eureka moment.

So instead, I am going with the story I already had on the bench.  100 words and a tad political.  The starter sentence was provided by  The Professor  -  "He walked in and slid the photograph across my desk."

Proof

He walked in and slid the photograph across my desk. I glanced at it and slid it back.

"Yeah so?"

"Yeah so? You wanted proof. Here it is." Ralph shoved the Kodak moment back in my direction.

“Ralph, this is not what we are after. I can’t print this.”

Ralph stared at me. “But this will ruin him. Isn’t that what your crew wants?”

How could one of the sheep understand?

“Ralph, the fact that he howls at the moon once a month won’t ruin him. Proving he is a Muslim and was really born in Kenya will. Get it?”

His Purpose - 100 Words - Lily's Friday Prediction

Lily over to her Feardom blog has posted her Friday Prediction words for last week.  100 words that use somewhere - Lunar, Bootlace (plural is OK), Voodoo

His Purpose - 100 words

He was born under a bright full moon. The exact date forgotten long ago. His soul, his essence bootlaced to tireless lunar cycles. Empty and apathetic, he took up space during the nights of no moon. Quarter moon evenings tortured him with promises of what would soon come. Like some Voodoo doll suffering new pins, each new phase made him weep pain he did not understand.

But when the moon was full he knew why he existed. His purpose became clear as he watched the fur grow near the tip of his nose and around his toes…………………

London was calling.

Ancient Aliens - 100 Words - Lily's Friday Prediction

“Charlotte……..Come quick.”

Kneeling in dried bat guano, Charlotte was focusing her brush and trowel on some fossilized remains. “Harry, I’m busy here.”

“No. You need to see this.”

Charlotte sighed and stood up. She headed towards the back of the cave, Harry’s lights illuminated some drawings he found yesterday. Emblazoned on the wall was an oblong object with two faces painted under it. Arrows pointed up.

Charlotte gasped. “Is that Sarah and John?”

“Can you imagine the implication if this gets out?”

“I told you back when we watched them get nominated, they had to be aliens. There’s your proof.”

This was prompted by the three words on Lily's Feardom - Drawings, Implication and Charlotte

I changed one word from my original piece posted on Lily's Friday Prediction.

The Spinach Dominion - 100 words

Lily Childs has a weekly or at least semi weekly prompt challenge she runs over at her blog.  Called "Lily's Friday Prediction", it is a 100 word challenge that must incorporate the three words she comes up with.  Just another blogger trying to goose the rest of us into some creative writing.  Anyway, here is my effort for this week.

This week's words-
~Carotid Artery
~Spinach
~Dominion

The Spinach Dominion

Just back from the Spinach Dominion, Esther stepped lively to report in.

“Yo Essie?”

Ester turned to see Phil running towards her.

“What is it Phil?” She continued walking.

Phil caught up and grabbed her arm to make her stop.

“Dammitt Phil, let go. I’m late as it is.”

Phil placed a finger on her carotid artery.

“What the Hell are you doing Phil?”

“Just making sure the Essie we sent to Veggie Ville is the Essie we got back.”

Phil roasted her with his Lazgun.

The whiff of burnt onion made him conclude, no, Essie was now plant food.

The Cook - 100 words

It seems I need to edit this. So here goes

The secret to cooking was patience. Don knew this, but time was not on his side here. Outside forces Unexpected company had forced his hand. Company They would be dropping by arriving in less than three hours. Here he was cleaver in hand trying to figure which appendage body part to chop up first. The 20 gallon pot was just starting to warm. There would be no time to offer up a proper feast. A quick stew comprised of smaller cuts would have to do. First he needed to remove the rings and that watch. Metal never added much to the taste of a good stew.
___________________________

I kept seeing these 100 word challenges so I thought some practice was in order. Show some "patience" if you will while I cooked up something that was 100 words long, yet still conveyed a complete meal, uh I mean story.

After the comments, I realized this effort was not even close to my usual mediocre attempts. Taking everyone's comments to mind, I have redone it. Makes more sense now I think.

100 Words on Fusion

“No Sympathy”

“Fusion, Mr. Stiles. Not fission. Not fussing, and certainly not FISHING! Which is obviously what you are doing and tells me you are once again unprepared for class."

“But Cap, I…….”

“Mr Stiles, please sit down. The glow of your intellect is blinding the rest of us.”

Stinky Stiles sat. Red faced, sweat staining his drab khaki collar. He hung his head and stared at his desk until 0955 when class let out.

The bell rang. Cadets filled the halls. But Stinky still sat.

“Cap, someone put super glue on my seat.”

“Congratulations Mr. Stiles. You have finally discovered fusion.”

______________________________________________________________________

The above is my entry in the weekly Velvet Verbosity 100 word contest. It is fiction loosely based on truth and real life people. We actually called Stinky "Anteater". And contrary to the story he was really a brainiac. But he was a jerk. We punished that poor kid mercilessly. In Chem class, I once dripped acid on his overseas cap while he had it folded in his back pocket. The rules were very specific. When indoors, overseas caps were to be folded neatly in half and placed in right rear pocket. The acid worked it's wonders during the hour class. When Anteater put it on to go outside he did not notice the holes in his hat. He received 10 demerits for breaking the uniform code. I never owned up to it. I guess I should feel guilty now. But did I mention he was a jerk? It could not have happened to a more deserving live by the rules tight ass. I think those were the only demerits Anteater received the entire 4 years he attended Charlotte Hall.

To put it in perspective, while I graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant, I also had the dubious honor of graduating with what was called unlimited demerits. Too many to count. Or they stopped counting once I hit 200 or so. I can't remember. I got caught being stupid quite a bit. The only thing that saved me I guess was I was 4th or 5th in my class, I played sports well, and I marched well. I could fling around that M-1 rifle with the best of them.

I do remember the day before I graduated, the Skin (commandant) told me if I wanted to graduate with my rank, I would have to take some whacks. Whacking a senior was almost unheard of. But since I had become very familiar with his evil paddle my previous 3 years, I figured it would be worth it to not have to explain to friends and family why I was graduating as a buck private. Skin discounted the demerit to whack ratio tremendously. I only received 10. But he lifted me hard each time he laid into me. I deserved every one.

The picture at the top right is of some of my school mates marching to class back in 1969/70. I am not in that picture. But I am in this next one. I'm the bonehead flashing the peace sign on the right. Notice the spit shine on my shoes. Damn, I was a punk. BTW, this is a picture of the varsity soccer team.

Remember the times though. Vietnam was going full bore and I had discovered my affinity for the protest. Earlier that year I was beaten almost senseless by a DC cop during a protest while in full uniform. He thought I was in the Army and showing disrespect to the uniform by being one of the protesters screaming around the Capitol. In actuality I was there with my English teacher as part of a tour of the Library of Congress. Cap gave us a couple of hours free time before we headed back to school 50 miles away. Naturally being curious dumass boys, we gravitated to the protest just to see what was up. It got ugly a few moments after we arrived. That unwarranted beating was a turning point in my life. I attended every protest I could after that. And I protested.

100 words on Evolution - Mother Nature

Regaining control of the ship as it cleared the black nothing of the hole wasted precious minutes before she could take her bearings. Sirens screamed, informing Star Traveler she had only 20 hours of air left to find it.

Yes! She had done it! Found a system with a G2 sun. She knew what to do. There, the blue one. The third planet. She changed her heading.

The broken ship melted into the emerging ice cap. Star Traveler opened her veins and let her blood drain onto the ice. “How will we turn out this time?” She closed her eyes.

Another entry in Velvet Verbosity's "100 words" contest. I do not even care how I do. This is so much fun. Trying to tell a story or make a point in 100 words. It definitely goes against my normal way of putting pen to paper. Instead of my usual rambling long way around, the 100 word limit makes me get to my point quickly and without the clutter that usually clogs my posts. Maybe I will learn some discipline from exercises like this.

This time I will get it in on time. I was allowed to enter the "faster" one. I am guessing it was a sympathy thing because I'm the dufus new guy. Anyway, again, who cares? This 100 word gig is way cool. I may just make it a once a week thing.

Faster

Hmm. Another challenge. Another blogging contest. The winner gets bragging rights and feels good for a moment or two. Velvet Verbosity runs the contest. It is simply called "100 Words". 100 words on a subject picked weekly by the host. This week it is "Faster". Here goes.

"Who do you think is faster?"

Said Slug to Caterpillar as he scurried past.

"Why me of course", Caterpillar said. "I have many legs, you have none."

"Is it so important to be fast", Slug wondered. "Think of all you miss moving at such break neck speeds."

Caterpillar turned, twitched his antenna in that condescending caterpillar way and huffed, "Anything I do not see cannot be worth seeing. So why slow down?"

Caterpillar picked up the pace just as Slug shouted out, "Well slowing down can be a lifesaver." And Caterpillar was lost under the heel of a passing boot.

In Passing

It appears I was too late to submit this for consideration. Reading rules and instructions has never been my strong suit. But after spending more than what some folks would consider a sane amount of time on it, I am damn well going to post it here anyway. Damn rules. It was a tough one.
