From the article:
"Agenda 21 is a U.N. resolution ratified in 1992 that encourages the 178 signatories to seek ways to develop in a way that is friendly to the environment and sustainable over a long period of time."
It appears this evil notion is the weapon that will finally bring our great country down. The heroes fighting the evil being spread in its name are patriots who recognize that urban sprawl is an American birthright, guaranteed under the Constitution. Okay, so the almost smart ones know it isn't, but they are damn sure it should be.
Apparently our own intellectually challenged governor, Paul LePage is on board also.
"In Maine," the Times(NY) writes, "the Tea Party-backed Republican governor canceled a project to ease congestion along the Route 1 corridor after protesters complained it was part of the United Nations plot."
I cannot speak to the evil creeping in down in Moore County, Texas, but I do know a thing or two about the proposed project on Rte 1. In a country that over the years seems to have embraced traffic congestion as an American right, I can see why easing congestion on what might be the busiest road in New England in the summer could be taken as an attack initiated by secret agents, foreign and domestic. I cannot count the number of blissful hours I sat in my big truck in traffic full of friendly folks from away waiting to cross the Kennebec River. Local custom was to sit quietly and enjoy the fumes of the vehicles nearby. But the visitors, well they were not well versed in local customs. They would show their joy by honking their horns and sticking their hands and arms out of their windows to wave.
And now Agenda 21 will take that away from us. I for one applaud the efforts to keep such evil from ever reaching our shores. Take a peek here to read for yourself just how the insidious evil called Maine Gateway 1 and Agenda 21 will begin here in Maine. Until of course the keepers of the gate caught it and shot it down like the rabid dog it really was.
Preserving livability and safety are most assuredly commie plots. As is of course easing congestion. If America wanted less congestion, we would not have bought so many cars.

You live in a strange country, my friend. And when the lunatics gain full control of the asylum, they will come for you.
Having suffered through traffic during summers on Cape Cod, I have a fair idea what your situation on Rte 1 is like. Why would anyone want things to move smoothly when you can have constant gridlock??
Methinks it's the Drill Baby Drill faction working behind the scenes here. What better way to waste oil and drive up prices than sitting in traffic doing nothing?
I had no idea you could just condemn nuclear weapons, it's as easy as that?
I'm lucky enough to live where gridlock is on two lane streets, for the most part.
There's no four lane freeway between me and the rest of this country.
The greatest trick Lenin ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't still exist in a state of zombie undeath.
Down with nukes!
Up with superbugs!
That's the one thing I really like about you Crum. I can always see your snarky goodness.
Maybe we should just make Texas our permanent repository for hazardous materials. I'm sure they won't mind.
In the bizarro world the right wing inhabits, sustainable development, conservation, wise use, and similar terms are now code words for black helicopters and a UN takeover. Agenda 21 has been around for almost 20 years now, but suddenly the tinfoil hat crowd is smelling a giant conspiracy to deprive us of our right to breathe smog and drink polluted water. High Country News (www.hcn.org) has an interesting article in the current issue about the effect of paranoia about Agenda 21 in Colorado -- remember the asshat politician who ranted about bicycle paths being unamerican? He's a believer in Agenda 21 being a nefarious plot to control us all.
I've never understood the people who rail against things like recycling, bike paths, public transit, etc. -- what is the downside to having a cleaner environment and a healthier lifestyle?
I would expect nothing less from Pepe Le Page
