I am a Lumberjack and I'm Okay

At first I thought this blogging medium was a great way for folks to come out of their individual shells and mind meld like Spock and all would become one huge intelligence that would transcend the need for bickering and flicking boogers at each other.

Of course that was just me having an Acid flashback.

Neighborhoods. Specifically Blogging neighborhoods. Clicks, political groups, genre groupies, Mommy bloggers, whatever. This blogging world may encompass the planet, but per human tendencies, it has broken itself down into insular little enclaves that often seem unfriendly to those strangers passing by. Jeez, imagine that. Just like the real world.

However, (I just love this word - easier to type than "on the other hand" and is even more confusing when one looks at it by itself. However? What the Hell is however?) Where was I?

Oh yeah - However and on the other hand, the Internet has made the World smaller and the neighborhoods bigger. I know what you are thinking. "Wow Mike, what an awesome observation." And now, breath held and on the edge of your seat, you can't wait for the follow up...................... Uh, I sat down this morning with every intention of writing a serious and well thought out post that would make up for the useless post of yesterday. Hmm. Seems I haven't shaken the useless thing yet. All I want to do is be silly and poke fun at us humans because really folks, come on now..... We are pretty silly most of the time. I'd say stupid, but well I am including more people than myself here.

As I usually do, I searched for the reason behind my recent fall from seriousness. Why all of a sudden has Life ceased being nothing to joke about? I mean Jeez, if you can't take Life seriously, how the Hell can you expect to take anything seriously? Seriously. No foolin around..........Okay, you in the back - stop that snickering.

After much introspection, exospection, misdirection and a couple of minor erections, I have concluded it is the fault of Monty Python. Yeah that's right. I found someone else to blame for my foibles. failings and deviant behaviors. I am sure my dearly departed parents are breathing a sigh of relief that they had no part in this. But if I had a therapist, and could afford one given that my insurance doesn't cover loony stuff - well my therapist would probably disagree and ask me how did I feel while still in the womb knowing I would probably not like the World I was being forced into and that's why I decided to come out ass first.

My favorite cable channel, IFC, has recently been airing all kinds of programming about Monty Python. Their movies, many of their skits, and even more interesting in some ways, the back stories behind their rise to fame. And of course I have been there face glued to the screen reliving those moments of gut splitting pleasure I had as a younger man when they first invaded our country via that commie lib medium, PBS. Odd though, it was my Goldwater Conservative mom who turned me onto them. I know this flies in the face of the rumor that Conservatives have no sense of humor, but there you have it. Anecdotal evidence. What more could you ask for?

I know I promised to do better next time, and I am trying. But I need to purge my undersized brain of all the sensory over load comprised of huge feet, big teeth and fish slapping. I'll be better once IFC goes back to showing films with subtitles.

Later......................

I think I would have liked your mom, Mike.

I don't know how it happened, but I got hooked on Monty Python in my early teens, watching reruns on the Bangor PBS affiliate we picked up in Nova Scotia. I am in the process of slowly and carefully introducing my teenage daughters to Monty Python via the stuff found on YouTube. They quite like the Argument Sketch. I think it's probably time to introduce them to the Ministry of Silly Walks. The edgier stuff, like their movies, will wait until their older. In their 30s.

I know this flies in the face of the rumor that Conservatives have no sense of humor, but there you have it.

Now, I would just like to point out that this blog is displaying a distinct tendency to become SILLY. Now, nobody likes a good laugh more than I do... except, perhaps my wife... and some of her friends. Oh, yes, and Captain Johnson. Come to think of it, most people like a good laugh more than I do, but that's beside the point! I'm warning this blog NOT to get SILLY again! Right!

That should be "until they're older." Good grief - a 3rd grade error made at age 42. I obviously need more coffee.

It's no use taking life seriously, you'll never get out of it alive!!

I enjoyed this post Mike. :)
I agree with the clique thing in blogland. I hate that. I really try to put myself out there and read blogs and yes, even comment on them, that I may not have feel an immediate connection with.
I've actually made a lot of great friends that way.
Let's face it. I'm one of the "Mommy Bloggers". I don't know a lot about politics or even the world in general. *However* hehee.. If I hadn't put myself out there, I never would have met great people like, Utah, Randal and you! (many others as well) ;P

Love Monty Python btw. Haven't seen one of those movies in years though! :P

((Hugs))

El Cerdo Ignatius - You would have definitely liked my Mom. And my Dad. Something tells me they would have liked you also. Not sure why you are waiting til your daughters are teens to subvert their wholesome upbringing. Shock & Awe man! Except for that nervous tic when she is around baked beans, my daughter turned out just fine.

BTW - One of my favorite skits of their's is linked on my sidebar - "The Bicycle Repairman" - for obvious reasons

Kulkiri - It does seem to be a futile struggle doesn't it?

sunshine - Some of my favorite bloggers are mommy bloggers. Women have a way with words we men ought to pay more attention to. Sure wish I did when I was still on the hunt as a young man. But well, you know how young guys are, their brains are behind their zippers. Come to think of it, I guess we never outgrow that tendency. Ask my wife. She is positive we don't.

Are you saying our brains should be elsewhere? Between the Python and the stupid, I couldn't help but think of Kevin Kline from A Fish Called Wanda, "don't call me stupid!"

MrMaCrum:

Several points:

1. Your essay about Monty Python was refreshing to read! I forgot how much I missed seeing them. My wife is not a fan, so I guess I should look for DVDs so I can squirrel them away and watch them late at night after she goes to bed.

2. It is funny you mentioned the Flash Fiction Starting sentence deadline with your comment to me.... I actually had the thought just as I was submitting the "scrambled eggs" essay... "Damn, I better go and submit a sentence... before I miss the deadline AGAIN." like I did last week.

3. While there are indeed a lot of "cliques" and isolationists in the blog/Internet world... I am perhaps still in a pipe dream in that I feel so much optimism still about the potential this medium offers (and sometimes realizes) to bring far distant and far divergent people together who otherwise would never meet. I know it has happened to me many, many times. I still have that feeling of being given a gift of a broader world ever since the first time I logged on.

4. I have been meaning to ask you for a while now.... even though your name is spelled differently, I would imagine a lot of people have talked to you over the years about R. Crumb, the cartoonist. What do you think about him, his art, etc? Perhaps if you find it interesting enough a topic, it could be one of your essays in the future.

Randal - Of course not. Our brains are where they need to be for the species to continue unabated. However, it appears we will soon be passe. The wimmin are figurin ways to get along without us.

Demeur - Along with Fire Sign Theater, the rise of underground comics, the 1970s were about as funny a decade as there ever was.

Pipe Tobacco -
1. No need to DVD, just google them and watch on your computer.
2.Yeah, having only two choices just did not seem fitting.
3.I have also had that feeling of closeness with folks I would never had run into otherwise. Hence my reference to the World getting smaller. But we tend to group up. That habit is still with us. The Internet is still in it's infancy. I am sure we cannot imagine fully where it will ultimately take us.
4. I get the R.Crumb thing a lot. Especially since I named my bike shop "CRUM Cycles". I enjoyed his comics immensely. "Mr Natural" was our team mascot back in college when I played some club rugby.

Dirty Vicar - BTW , that is a great handle you have there. Anyway, thanks. I had fun writing it.
