Blueberry Boy

I never wanted to weigh in like that again.  I think it was 3 years ago.  Mud Season was beginning and I had just crawled out of my cave after a winter of  doing absolutely nothing but sleeping and eating.  I tipped the scales at 240 pounds.  At 5'8" tall on a good day, I was looking every bit like a blueberry with legs.

What the Hell had happened I wondered?  How did I ever allow my gut to expand beyond the healthy love handle stage into beach ball bingo mode?  Seems like I went to sleep a svelte 190 or so and one day out of the blue, I woke up and those handles now started just below my tits.  Wow.

So I promised myself I would lose 50 pounds and at least drop back into human form before I kicked the bucket.  As I said, I think that was 3 years ago.  That first Spring and Summer I managed to greet October weighing about 211.  By March of the next year, I ballooned again but kept it down to around 230.   I hit October last year a little closer to my target weight by dropping down to 206, but lost ground again once the snow covered everything up.  This past March I greeted Spring at 217.  Finally I thought, this is the season I ride myself back to 190 pounds.

I can smell 190.  I have been hovering around 192 -193 for a month now.  I have what? - less than 2 weeks to drop 3 more pounds?  Certainly seems to be a reasonable expectation to think I can lose a paltry 3 pounds before October 1st.  Yeah,  well it ain't I guess.  I have been trying now for over a month and it seems as if my body is now rebelling with everything it has.  Barring some self amputation for that quick victory, I sit here frustrated as my previous attempts to breach the last wall have been turned back.

Ten days actually.  Ten days to reach a goal I have thought about for three years.  Anyone know how much an arm weighs?

I'd love to lose 50 kg but am afraid to tell the Genie in the lamp for fear that one of my legs suddenly goes missing. One needs to be careful for what one wishes.
Biking is a good idea. Even walking my dogs daily would help but I am so lazy i let them walk themselves.

Mike you should be proud of youself for losing what you've lost. Maybe what you're at now is what you're body feels comfortable at. What's a few pounds anyway.

Well done, my friend!

Hahahahahaha!!! I never thought of that. Don't think I'd recommend it, though.

And I'm with David. If you're hovering around 192-193, that's pretty dang good. It would appear from the pattern you described that the secret is not to balloon too much over the winter.

Let me know if you figure out how to do that. I've always been tall and slim (not trim, but slim at least), but the weight began to appear after the age of 35. Now I found myself, for the first time in my life, actually exercising a bit of caution when it comes to what and how much I eat.

Ah well. It was fun while it lasted. Nowadays, I'm happy if I'm within 5 pounds of my target weight.

I have just the opposite problem. If I miss a meal I drop 5 pounds. High metabolism I guess. Not so bad now that I'm not working. So if I could I'd trade you at least for a while.

Do not lose heart. It is workable and doable... you will get there.

I was able to, for the first time in my life, obtain a normal BMI (I am 6'2" and now weigh 180). I have kept it off for 1.5 years now, and it is the first time I have *ever* had a normal BMI. I am currently 40 pounds lighter than when I graduated from high school. And my peak weight was at one time 282 pounds.

Blog Fodder - Lazy? I can certainly relate. Losing weight is not for the faint of heart. Cutting out the things my gut loves and then also pushing my muscles to activities they have come to hate has been an eye opening experience. But I do feel much better than I have in years.

David - Yes, my body has plateau -ed. It has done this several times since I began my weight loss quest. I will reach 190, of that I am sure. I have just pushed back the time table to the end of October.

El Cerdo Ignatius - Winter weight gain - the old fart's worst enemy here in Maine. When it's ball freezing cold out and even the dog wants to stay in, any incentive to go outside is lost when I look at the couch sitting there warm in front of the fireplace.

Demeur - Until I was in my mid-thirties, I had the same problem as you. I had to be careful or I would lose weight.

Pipe Tobacco - Your successful effort to walk your way to better health has been one of my major inspirations. I thank you for that sir.

I know you are a very technical man. That is science rules for you. BMI indexes are but one indicater of good health in my opinion when using them for my body style. We Macrums have never fit neatly into any BMI index. According to the calculation I should weigh in at 160 to be considered healthy. When I hit college, I weighed 175. My college lacrosse coach put me on a weight gain diet and boosted me to almost 200. He could not understand how I could play midfield at the skin and bones weight of 175. I was skinny as hell with a 30 inch waist at 175. If truth be told, 175 is the weight I would like to hit next summer. I get there and all this work will have been worth it. But the BMI index will still tell me I am overweight.

Since you're on a weight loss kick, can you send me your bags of potato chips?
