Stupid History

I am constantly reminded of the circular nature of History, especially Stupid History, and our species' ingrained blind spot to it.  Reality is Reality and nothing we humans can do will alter it.  But we do have fun messing with its interpretation.

We often ignore reality,, choosing instead to live in a fool's paradise.  We change our perception of it to fit a conceptual notion of what it should be.  Then we teach it to our children and they grow up and either find the truth or perpetuate the myths.

It would appear that this is just human nature.  Bullshit.  The smart people know what they are doing.  Controlling the actions of the peons is always the end goal.  Altering facts and issuing empty promises has worked for millenniums.  As a group, we are nummer than a bag of pounded thumbs.  We are just lucky every other critter on the planet is not equipped to do it better.

So, down in our bones, we know that history repeats itself.  Time is an 8 track loop and though the clothes and idioms may change, we seem determined to repeat the same stupid shit time and time again.  The crap we keep dredging up seems to rise to the surface of the cesspool of stupid causes every 100 years or so.

Take Evolution.  It was roughly 80 to 100 years or so ago it kicked Genesis to the bench and became the star player in American schools.  Without the rise of science in our schools, we would not be the economic and scientific juggernaut of today.  Without science our upcoming fall from grace would have happened years ago.

Now, Genesis and the other silly notions in the Bible are making a comeback as "alternative" theories of Evolution.   Stupidity is on the rise as evidenced by the current political leadership.  Rather than making progress on all of the dangers facing us, they would rather regress and place their faith in a book that has let the Human race down for centuries.

No matter what, we will deserve what we get.  God will have nothing to do with it.

We need to quit calling it the 'theory of evolution' and call it the science of evolution. Now with genetics to fill in the blanks on the fossil record evolution is a fact not a theory.

Easily proven: if you are a descent of western Europe your DNA likely contains from two to four percent Neanderthal.

You can argue with that, but to do so proves your ignorance. And we do love our ignorance - the Bible is proof of that.

Ol'Buzzard - I was kinda hoping I was hoping I skipped Neanderthal and went right to Cro-Magnon. You just ruined my day.

While as a biologist, I know well and understand the value of the scientific concepts of evolution, and while there is ample scientific evidence to support the tenets of evolution, for me, truth-be-told, whether or not the general public ascribes to this scientific knowledge or not is relatively immaterial to me.

For me, the bigger scandal, and the bigger crisis is when the science disinterested, science-non believing public dismisses scientific information that is more directly relevant to quality of life.

For me, I become far more disgruntled about folk's dismissal of the scientific evidence of climate change. I am far more aggravated about folk's dismissal of the problems of pollution. I am far more concerned with the widespread fear mongering about the "dangers" of vaccines.

Whether or not most folks "believe" in the science of evolution has relatively little bearing on my day-to-day life. Whether or not a lot of stupid folks believe the Earth if flat has virtually no impact on my life. I have to pick and choose the battles over stupid thoughts of others that need to matter to me, I guess. There will always be people who are being stupid... but to me it matters more when their stupidity may impact me.

Hmm. I just left a comment about evolution and it did not post. I am hoping it is held for you to moderate and can then appear. If it is was lost, I will try to repost it.

I was also wondering how your refraining from tobacco is going? My own journey away from the delightful, brown, burley leaf is still intact, but it is awfully damn frustrating how the desire to smoke my pipe does not gently fade away. Granted there are some days that are pretty easy... but there are still days where the call of my pipe is ENORMOUS and I have to wage a battle with my id to keep refraining. I *thought* after this many months (around 9 now) the cravings would be more of a declining linear slope. Instead, it is an ebbing and flowing sine wave that makes me feel like I am on a roller coaster at times.
